How to Extract Audio from Video: A Quick Tutorial

You have a video of your mom giving a toast at a wedding. The video is great, but you want to use her voice to create a memorial model. To do that, you need to separate the sound from the picture.

Extracting audio from video is easier than you think. Here are three ways to do it.

Method 1: Using Online Converters (Easiest)

If you have a small file (under 100MB), online converters are the quickest option.

  1. Search for "Video to MP3 converter" or "MP4 to WAV".
  2. Upload your video file.
  3. Select "WAV" as the output format (it’s higher quality than MP3).
  4. Download the audio file.

Note: Be careful with privacy. Only use reputable sites for personal family videos.

Method 2: Using VLC Media Player (Free & Secure)

VLC is a popular free video player that can also convert files. This is a great option because the processing happens on your computer, so it’s private.

  1. Open VLC.
  2. Go to Media > Convert / Save.
  3. Click "Add" and select your video file.
  4. Click "Convert / Save" at the bottom.
  5. In the "Profile" dropdown, select Audio - MP3 or create a new profile for WAV.
  6. Choose a destination file name.
  7. Click "Start."

Method 3: Using Editing Software (For Pros)

If you are already using video editing software like iMovie, Adobe Premiere, or DaVinci Resolve:

  1. Import your video.
  2. Drag it to the timeline.
  3. Go to Export or Share.
  4. Choose "Audio Only" or "WAV" as the export format.

What to Do Next

Once you have your audio file, listen to it.

  • Is the voice clear?
  • Is there background music? (Music can confuse AI models).
